Taking forever to read this cos it’s pretty heavy! But it is really good.

Idk I feel like this could have been so much better if the author put a shred more effort into understanding or portraying the inner voice of someone in this culture/religion. So many little details and holes which pull me out of it and make it clear I am reading someone else’s idea of what this life looks like. Fundamentally I understand the message but it is not executed well at alllllll

It’s an engaging story for sure. Wouldn’t be surprised if the author had no experience growing up in a high-control fringe Christian religion. Yea maybe I’m expecting a bit more having that perspective myself, attention to detail isn’t much to ask for- many people without that experience manage to do their research. It reads as gimmicky. The time travel aspect just makes me want to reread Kindred instead.

Maybe it’s not his intention, but I get the sense that the author is incredibly impressed by wealth. Something especially cringeworthy about this considering it’s an American writing about the British upper classes. Over here we regard those people as inbred and horse-faced.

Ok it’s kind of trashy but I just want something to get me back into reading. So far the descriptions of how prosperous London was in the 90s/00s is making me seethe. I also have contempt for families of that ‘dad is a financier; mum has generational wealth so can work in the arts’ class, so we’ll see if I make it all the way through without ragequitting.

There truly is no excuse considering I KNOW he can write better depictions of characters from different experiences and backgrounds to himself… or at least put more effort in… the depiction of disability is at least an attempt
