david is finished with Chaos (Kay Scarpetta, #24)
260 pages in and not a lot has happened maybe i'm to use to pratchett who gives a brief intro then throws you into the story rather than authors that spend over half a book explaining the last book.

What am i missing here? Nearly everyone rates this as one of the greatest books ever but so far nothing has really happened! for the past several chapters Tolkien has spent 20 pages describing scenery and the journey , throwing in the odd poem, then something happens and if quickly resolved before another 3 pages describing how they stop , eat and have a bath.

i fell there is no character development or plot?

Its Insane to think this was written in 1898 because unlike a lot of sci-fi it has not aged (it could still happen today)

‘You mean he didn’t get to be king because everyone liked him but because no one disliked him enough?’
To me it seems the way the dwarfs pick their king is very similar to the way the English pick their prime ministers (especially the recent one Borris)

Glad to see the idea that humans forget (or can't see) what they know can't be true is back :-)
“The Human mind has a remarkable ability to heal. So have the trollish and dwarfish minds. Susan looked at them in frank amazement. They'd all seen a horse stand on the air. And now they had clearly pushed it somewhere in their memories and broken of the key in the lock”

and Susan Sto Helit is bck oh how I missed her

Only just started this but I am loving it already, the jokes are silly (childish) but they still made me chuckle like a crazy man. heres an example :-
‘That’s a harp he’s playing, Nobby,’ said one of them, after watching Imp for a while.
'Lyre.’
'No, it’s the honest truth, I’m-’ The fat guard frowned and looked down.

Plus it has all my favourite character from the other books (Mort and Hogfather)
