The 3rd story is about a husband and wife attending the wedding of a woman the husband had a crush on as a teenager. Things don’t go as planned - the wife’s skirt has a hole, they have no cell service to call their kids, the wife spends the evening chatting with a guy named Ted, the husband drinks too much. The second story is about a Bengali family who welcomes a fellow Bengali man into their family. The wife definitely likes him as more than a “brother”, so when he tells them he is dating an American woman, it is devastating for the wife. But there is jealousy on both sides if only both women could learn to communicate it.

The first story is about an Indian woman whose mother has unexpectedly died, and her father comes for a visit. She isn’t sure if she wants to invite her father to live with her and her family, but it turns out, he doesn’t want to because he has found a new life - and a new woman - in traveling.

“As for political, religious or racial issues, always tread carefully-or better yet, don’t go there.” Someone is not following her own advice! 🧐

“In fact, when we post, we are actually choosing to tell our followers something about ourselves…But more than just position yourself, social media enables you to craft your image just like a seasoned stylist.” I went to Aliza’s Instagram thinking it would be fashion stuff, but it’s just her supporting Donald Trump and calling Kamala Harris a moron. Unfortunate.

There are random *S placed throughout the book. I went looking in the back to see if there were any footnotes that the *S was supposed to lead me to. There is a glossary, and the first entry is *S: a homemade sarcasm symbol that the author invented. 🙄 Lady, if you have to tell people you’re being sarcastic…

Ugh, she just told readers to check work email while on vacation. And to be indispensable to your boss, I.e. available after the work day is done. No thank you. This book is 11 years old. Not aging well.

Didn’t realize this was geared toward college-age women. Why, in a book about empowering young women, would you make jokes about how high in calories your muffin-and-coffee breakfast was? Who cares? Is this also a book on nutrition? I think working in the fashion industry may have warped her perspective a bit.

Making lesbians and gay men more legally visible will neither solve nor complicate anyone else’s daily commitments. And yet it will insist on something that is quite unnerving to acknowledge: that we must each pay rigorous attention to-and believe in-each individual spirit.

Restricting marriage to husband/wife pairs is an essential symbol of male supremacy-just as restricting marriage to one race was an essential symbol of white supremacy.

But if an affectionate father helps, and a nasty or distant father hurts, then researchers still haven’t discovered something essentially male that a child needs: they’ve simply discovered that children do better with closeness and reliability than with ridicule and rejection.

In 1930, Pope Pius XI issued his encyclical Casti Conubii (Of Chaste Marriage), which endorsed the old refraining/reproducing ideal by intoning that contraception “violates the law of God and nature,” and grew out of women’s “false liberty and unnatural equality” - a clear recognition that contraception and female emancipation went hand in hand.
