Inspired because my friend Kristin messaged me out of nowhere and asked if I wanted to reread Harriet the Spy (1964) in September. It’s one of my childhood favorites so I’m halfway through before September.

Harriet is smart, curious, with mad leadership skills (aka bossy) and I love her madly. As an adult, I learned that Louise Fitzhugh was a lesbian which made me love this book even more.

Ehhhh. I know everyone and their mother loved this book, but it bored me to tears. The characters seemed lackluster and I wanted to kick both Ryle and Atlas in the head repeatedly. I couldn’t bring myself to care about any one of them, and at 80 pages in, I really should have. It felt like another version of 50 Shades (which I also wasn’t a fan of).

I was morbidly curious, perhaps because I was so pleasantly surprised by Jessica Simpson’s memoir—- but I haven’t been moved to come back to it.

I first read this when I was nine or so. Pat Gardiner is a homebody and cherishes the boundaries of the home she share with her family. The tough thing about Pat is that - as the two book series goes on - this borders on agoraphobic.

Terrible. I’ve been waiting - like every other Gen Xer - for a real bio of VC Andrews. Neiderman arguably has been phoning in these ghostwritten meal ticket books for the last decade. He doesn’t phone this in so much as seems to compile stuff we already knew and jammed it into a book. The tone is boring, the writing thin. It felt like an utter disappointment.

Ehhh. Jude Deveraux had me with classics like Remembrance and Knight in Shining Armor. However, An Angel for Emily - first published at least 20 years ago - didn’t age well. It’s basically the story of a doormat who tries not to fall for the man and potential killer who says he’s her guardian angel. To be honest, I can’t give it a full review because I quit after 50 pages. Maybe it gets better?

Adorable and witty as hell - memoir of a writer who goes to live on a farm with her husband in (I think the) 1940s. MacDonald went on to write the Mrs. Piggle Wiggle books!

I want to personally deliver this book to every person who thinks that 50 Shades was a groundbreaking; compared to Exit to Eden (Belinda, Henry and June, etc) 50 Shades is bargain basement porn. Exit is intelligent, sexy, complicated, and did I mention intelligent…?

Loved it and had to return to library. Will check out again to finish. Gentle, smooth, a winter cocoon of a memoir.

Beyond creepy and wonderful. Perfect for fans of The Conjuring universe (based on these books!)

Weird and witchy Emily Starr is like Montgomery’s emo, dark haired version of Anne of Green Gables. Orphaned almost immediately when the first book (New Moon) begins, Emily is adopted by her good cop/bad cop aunts (Laura and Elizabeth). Whereas Anne eventually charms everyone into loving her, Emily and her three friends give zero fu*ks. Emily is also psychic and spends time talking to spirits. Anne Shirley who?

This was a moving and lively memoir of lesbian rights as seen through the eyes of Edie Windsor, mother of the marriage equality movement. Loved it.
