Been reading this book for more than three years and just reached page 42. World's strangest history book. Author uses no footnotes and his genteel, discursive style gives the impression he dictated the whole thing, requiring no research. Book is some deep inside baseball on C-town, assuming a working knowledge of local 18th century planter families sufficient to merit introducing main players only by their surnames.

Shoulda been Alec Guiness: Gay, Probably. Never seen one man work so hard to pull another out of the closet; a particularly bizarre thing to do when said outing is of a dead man and that there is little approaching no evidence to suggest he was into dudes and less evidence to suggest that matters to anyone besides the author.

Not a long book but ideas-per-sentence quotient is awfully high.

Good quotes, regrettable prose so far. Also jank main title and cover photo, which sports the worst of Miles' most awesome sartorial period.

Never heard of this guy but he is a stupid good writer. Serious crush on Rio. Empathetic, engagingly snarky, way readable travelogue.

Oh, there is some mis-/disinformation running around about Haiti.

After some academic sputtering, author does get down to breaking your face.

Sumo wrestling = ~a joke. Five stars already for breaking good on supposition whole sport isn't just fat dudes slapping each other.
