I love these kinds of books on intellectual and cultural history. I was looking forward to this one being released and so far it's measuring up to my hopes for it.

I hesitated for a while to read this because I didn't want to read a shallow culture war screed. But this isn't one. Definitely written from a conservative perspective but his historical genealogy of ideas is quite fair; he doesn't misrepresent the people he talks about. Doesn't mean I'll end up agreeing with his overall message. But I'm finding it a worthwhile and interesting to read.

I pretty much agree with it entirely. But it’s got me thinking about different ways this kind of literature is consumed. (1) I am convinced by and agree with this. I don’t need to read more literature that makes the same points. (2) I am convinced by and agree with this. I want to read more literature that makes the same points. I could see this subject becoming an unhealthy fixation with diminishing returns.

A friend recommended this to me about a year ago and I've put off reading it until now. Wow! This book is crazy good.
