Outside, the floorboards creaked from the weight of a person walking, as if complete silence were a cloak the enemy could wear and discard at will. The treading of heavy boots came closer and closer.

People being terrified of Kyoshi's light step but it's not military training but servant training of being unheard and unseen

Its face was a white mask, and its eyes were monstrous streaks of red
.
.
.

A thin line of blood trickled from its throat, as if it had been beheaded and glued back together
.
.
.

It was a spirit. It had to be. It was a spirit that could pass through walls, a ghost that could float over floors, a beast impervious to blades.

Kyoshi takes the Opera part of the Flying Opera Company very seriously 😂

The eye crept closer. “I can tell how upset you are by the truth,” it said in a soothing sweet tone. “Don’t be. Who needs Avatarhood? You will find your own use, and your own immortality. Once I strengthen myself on your blood, part of your essence will exist within me, forever.”

I keep imagining Father Glowworm as Bill Cipher from Gravity Falls 💀

... a pair of gauntleted arms burst through the brick. They wrapped around Po’s neck from behind in a chokehold, cutting off his words. Kuji saw his elder’s eyes go white with terror before Po was pulled out of the room straight through the wall. Po was a big man, and in a blink, he’d been taken like a raven eagle’s prey.

Kyoshi is such a menace and I love her 😭

It was Throatcutter Gong, unconscious and bleeding. His wrists bent the wrong way and his ankles were bound with his own garrote wire.

Honestly considering DNFing 😭 there's too much filler, the MMC gives me the ick and ohmygods can we go back to 400 page books instead of 800ish because booktok is all about romantasy overconsumption and bullying authors rn instead of mindful reading 😑 (but I told my friend I would give her a review ONLY after finishing though she hates the book too lol)

I wouldn't have been surprised if Brynn had given him the black eye rather than Carrion

I like Brynn, I hope she doesn't die 🫶🏻

“And then there will have been the people who fought for something better and the people who laid down and took it,” I spat.

I don't know if it's hopeful or annoying to see this relentless fire to fight in fiction, because it most certainly feels naive at best, and impractical at worst, especially if badly written. Things tend to change for the better because of trusty plot armour

I crossed my arms. “Well, I’m glad we had this talk, so I could unburden myself of all the things you already knew. I was also going to say that you’re important to me and I might even love you like a sister, but—”
“I already know that, too... S’okay. You’ve gotten less annoying, too.”

I hoped the real firefighter s were okay, because firefighters are important and also because they are hot, and no, that wasn’t relevant right then.

Apollo being unapologetically thirsty (even towards his toxic ex Commodus) at the most inopportune times is ironically the most relatable teenage thing for a 4612 years old former diety

Then again, neither of them looked anything like me, and as the son of Zeus, I was technically their brother. And I had flirted with Thalia, which…Eww. Curse you, Father, for having so many children!

Apollo learning to blame Zeus' libido for majority of mythological problems gives me new life (PLEASE I WAS SO GROSSED OUT WHEN HE FLIRTED WITH THALIA 😭😭)

Before I could argue, she took a flying leap out of the broken window—which was a pretty good metaphor for her general approach to life.

.
In the other wind column, Meg floated with her arms and legs crossed, scowling like an angry genie.

Meg being utterly unfazed by 100% of the things in the mythical world except her cute dryad friends will always be iconic

The wounded were sprawled everywhere, groaning from bashed heads, broken limbs, bleeding noses, and bruised groins. Many of their injuries were at knee level or below—just where Meg McCaffrey liked to kick.

Meg represents the WILD chaotic side of Demeter, no I'll not be elaborating

I can't tell if Incitatus' fav book is Black Beauty or the horse island bit from Gulliver's Travels (I don't know of any other horse themed books, sorry)

He didn’t seem to recognize the irony of a horse backing the right horse. Also, I was surprised to hear that Incitatus had an agenda.

“I meant the sorceress Medea will put you in chains and flay your human form to extract whatever remains of your godly essence. Then Caligula will consume your essence—yours and Helios’s both—and make himself the new god of the sun."

I don't think we appropriately appreciate the exposition and relevant spoilers given from their Disney villain speeches that minutely detail the diabolical plans

“Oh, I didn’t mean that literally.”
“Thank the gods.”

The BEST thing (apart from character development) about a 4500+ y/o protagonist is how normal the wacky conversations with immortal/mythological characters seem; this is a talking horse, mind you (I still remember Piper being weirded out at having to tell plants to sleep in TLH)

Some of my best friends are magic horses. Arion, the swiftest steed in the world, is my cousin, though he rarely comes to family dinners. The famous winged Pegasus is also a cousin—once removed, I think, since his mother was a gorgon.

Whenever I keep forgetting Percy Jackson is a half brother to two very cool magical horses and the golden fleece, I'm reminded of it and then proceed to giggle

“It’s not true, you know. The middle of a chain has the same tensile strength as everywhere else, assuming force is applied equally along the links.”

I sighed. “Are you making up for missing your physics lecture? You know what I meant!”

“I actually don’t,” he said. “Why attack in the middle?”

“Because…I don’t know!” I said. “They won’t be expecting it?”

Jason smiled. “Nah, I don’t call Tempest unless it’s an emergency. I was just flying around on my own, manipulating the wind.”

Meg pouted, considering the pockets of her gardening belt. “I can summon yams.”

Loving Apollo's character development rn, he really went from talking about Zeus being a tyrant, to acknowledging the multi-level abuse, to recognising there was a very toxic generational cycle among the dysfunctional Olympians <3

He still wants to run away whenever danger presents itself, which I've come to realise is how most of us would react if we had to face undead Roman emperors and their monstrous minions.

Apollo caring about people he's been around for literally 3 days, willing to lay down his life for Meg, his gentleness with animals... Such excellent character development though it's a little unrealistic given how whiny he was less than two months ago 😂 but I want to punch Zeus in his godly face for being so abusive
