This book has me reminiscing about the late 90s and early 2000s when I was either in HS or fresh out. Buying magazines that talked about the glam life as a black girl. Getting all my hip-hop news and fashion news from those magazines. This inside look is cool, especially with the drama that’s behind being in a fashion magazine.

2nd time reading this and it still hit as hard as the first time. Shonda is one talented woman and she’s also very funny! I really loved this and I am inspired to make it my own year of good things

This second read has been nothing short of amazing. The way that Shonda reads this makes it that much more amazing. She's so animated and personable. I am doing an immersive read with this book this time and I am taking away so much. This maybe my time to have my own YEAR OF YES!

This is my second time reading this book and it hits harder this time as I am looking to make changes in my life this year. The chapter on losing weight and celebrating yourself hit so close to home. This is about to be my year of yes.

I couldn't get into this book. This is going to be a DNF for me

Jim and his advice to the children to speak in ways that have the white people believe their superior and add to the farce that they aren’t aware of what’s going on. Wow!! This take on Huck Finn is a masterpiece.

The joys of reading having to be hid so that you don’t die. Love of writing. ✍️ wasn’t expecting to laugh as much in this book but I am laughing out loud.

I’m going to need Mateo Askarapour to give me more of this book because there’s no way he left me hanging the way he did with this sending. There has to be more. I need more.

This story is so touching. Kennedy Ryan knows how to get you. The trauma that these characters went through was so gut wrenching. Yasmen and Josiah have it cut out for them. I’m crying 😭

The banter between Aaliyah and Ahmad is hysterical. I’m here literally laughing out loud at these two.

I just couldn’t get into it.

Violet is a true bad ass. I like that she’s not backing down from her opponents and she’s smart. This book is very engaging.

Well that escalated quickly

What an ending. This book was perfect. Was so close to the end and things were still the same. But it ended off so well. OMG!! Love. Love!!

The way I just screamed!!! Ahhhh!! I knew it. I knew there had to be something more. OMG!

The way I’m sitting at the edge of my seat right now. I have done nothing today but read this book. I am ok with not doing anything but reading. This book got me. I am so invested.

OMG!! WTF!! You’re kidding me. This came from no where. I was not expecting this. Oh shit!

All this history is so good. I am still at a crossroads about how I feel about Happi. But Kezi definitely was the shining star. She had so much to give and she gave it. I am engrossed so highly into this story and the flashbacks in history is weaved in so well. The mention of the Haitian Revolution made it all come together.

The way I’m crying right now isn’t even right. I don’t like Happi. I think she’s too entitled. I am sad about Kezi and proud of her at the same time and I am so mad at the situation she’s in because this is indeed what many have gone through and it’s so unfair. Did I mention how I don’t like Happi

I am learning a lot in this book and enjoying every minute of it. Talk about laugh out loud funny. The relationship that Mo is building with Sasha and Reggie is adorable. This is a book my 16 year old self would have loved completely

The words in this book are so LOUD! While this story tells of a tragedy that happened in the 90s, it could easily be used to talk about what happened just a couple of years ago or what continues to happen now. Ashley is coming into her own and is realizing that sometimes staying quiet is not an option. You have to shake shit up to be heard. The revolution will be televised.

I remember being very young when this event happened. I didn’t know much about what was happening but I did know it was wrong. Now as an adult and watching something similar happen I know exactly how Ashley feels. This book is definitely one I want my students do read.

Well that escalated quickly. I love how these brothers know what they want and don’t wait around. They are ready. Talk about saying exactly what’s on your mind. Aiden really doesn’t mix words.

There are some hateful people in this world who don’t want others to win. Some of those people, those hateful people can be your own family. This book touched on so many deep emotions and situations. Check TW before reading but let me tell you the chemistry between the two characters was so good. I loved how they were so in sync with one another. The obstacles they faced together, so touching. I loved them.

Chris and Mallory have so much hurt and they don’t want to lean into each other but they are slowly building. I feel for both of them. They are troubled souls!!

Talk about reading a book that I didn’t know I needed to read. This book gave me everything. From talking about faith, parental love, parental abandonment, and self love this book was just what I wanted. I am enamored by Candice Marie Benbow! She said a mouthful and this is a book I will have to come back to again. One read isn’t enough.

It took me some time but I am done with this one. Hearing how Farah came to fall in love with books was heart warming, but the loss of her father in more ways than one was devastating. I loved how she spoke about various books that have played a role in her life growing up and also how many of the authors and books we have read about had many of the same themes. I need to get this in physical form. I listened to it
