I am very much not the intended audience for this book. Strongly considering DNF this.

Reading this together with my 7th grader. I would not have them read it at this age by themselves. Much to discuss already, including outdated language that should not be used today, alcoholism, racism, classism, and for my kid who is a big cat fan, we are skipping lightly over some of the stuff about a cat. Much more to discuss in the rest of the play coming up.

Describes a terrible famine.
He said he would “be a man” and did something that I say was actually being a coward. I’m angry enough about what he just did in this part, that I’m going to let my 11 year old get a little older before reading this. Or maybe he can read the rest of the book but skip over this part.
The writing is good, the story very intense and important (other than the choice he just made).

My 3d grader read the story, now he’s going back to read about the drawing methods in detail. He’s loving the book.
He is impressed it covers “dragon anatomy.” As a veterinarian, I’m disappointed that meant things like skeleton and skin but not muscles and guts, ha ha!
My impressions of the book are it’s unexpectedly heavy (weight), the drawings look cool and fun to draw.
