Hardly surprising that I'd love this. There's just so much complexity and richness to Martin's books - which explains why he takes so long to write them - and this explores it from a philosophical perspective. I'm keen to get this book read before next week's episode.

Paul Stewart is finished with Nothing to Envy: Ordinary Lives in North Korea
North Korea has become something of a sad meme in recent years. It's a great pity that the world's focus is upon its crazed leader and not upon the people of that country. I thought this book was remarkable in the gentle way it unfolded the real lives of the people scraping out a living under the shadow of totalitarianism. A fascinating investigation of a complex history and a sensitive people.

Continuing to be amazed and shocked at this book. It has been an educational read. I thought my history was pretty good but it's been an eye-opener to read of the roles that China and the US played in the formulation of the current North Korean persona.

The things I am learning about North Korea are absolutely insane! Here's a country that can now hit the USA with a missile but doesn't have enough electricity to keep the lights on at night. Apparently, if you fly over North Korea at night - not that you'd want to - it's just a black hole surrounded by the lights of Japan, China and South Korea.

It's humbling to read a book that reminds me of how little I know.
