This was not easy to get into, but I think that has more to do with the expectations I had going into this than the book itself. Realizing that this book is not, in fact, a cozy mystery, nor is it a feel-good library chick-lit, I've begun to understand the book on its own terms, which is an interesting kind of dark realism one doesn't often encounter in either of the genres mentioned above.
