The second novella, An Episode in the Life of A Landscape Painter, was released the same year as A Terrace in Rome. Both are about facially disfigured travelling artists, in the 17th and 19th century respectively. Is this significant? Probably not. Just thought I’d make a note of it.

‘The story of tomoda and matsunaga’ by Tanizaki Jun’ichiro - not sure if it needs the last part where the story is essentially explained to the narrator. I liked the ending to part 4: “in the end, seduced by the fine weather, I spent the rest of the day touring the local sights... Later I admired the bonsai plum trees at the Taiseirō inn, where I stayed the night”
