Amazing saga! I've made it to Part 4: The War.

"The images changed as quickly as shadows that passed across the windows of a train traveling through a sunlit forest. Frances lay with her eyes tight closed for she knew not how long. Hoping that her fear had its basis only in her mind, she tried to think of something else. If she wasn't close to sleep, she nevertheless seemed close to dreaming."

Part II: The Levee

"It seemed to me that there were two worlds: one before the sun, and one after. And if that were true, then maybe there were people who were citizens of those different worlds as well. Some moved easily through the landscape of the night, and others clung to the bright hours. Maybe I had seen one of those dark citizens, in the world before the sun".

Everything was there and around us. We knew exactly who we were and exactly where we were going. It was grand.

"Is this a bad time to ask about the spear you put in the back? Or should I put a pin in that?"

The world - rainstorm, voice of god, green wilderness beyond, beggars and magistrates, parasites in the apples: ruin and destruction like the shadows of vulture wings - spun around him.

Ok i was going to DNF, but i think I've changed my mind. These stories, these people are fucking odd! I'm kind of mildly repulsed but then strangely drawn to it. I'll pick this up again but definitely have to read something else in between each story!

Yes!

Greely could finally exhale. Of the ice canyon he wrote: "I recall no other weird mass which so impressed me with the grandeur and scope of nature's forces and works," adding that "the narrow cleft ... afforded perhaps the most wonderful passage ever traversed by any voyagers."

Trying to figure out motivations... beyond what's on the surface. Can't stop reading!
