I’m going to put it aside - DNF. Just not the right time for me and this book. Might try again.

I still can't quite catch my breath. This book knocked the wind out if me. It is a true life horror story of hatred, slavery, and hope; And everlasting scars and wounds - physical and emotional. It's Mende's survival story. Despite it all, she survived. Her story urges me to be aware. Be compassionate. Be kind. Teach my children to trust their instincts. And protect children. All children everywhere.

An amazing read of the great migration (southern Blacks to the north and west) - well researched; a perfect balance of history, details, and personal narrative.
