Despite reviews about excessive wordcounts, I am totally enamored with this novel. I fxcking love that it's mostly from the perspective of an African woman, and that the author so painstakingly researched the subject of !Xabbu's people and the story is engrossing and and and.. I love it.

Oh boy, I'm finally getting some nerdtastic magical history. I love Amelia and Marci.

I've never highlighted more passages in a book before in my life. I think Jewel and I could he good friends.

"I never valued what a stand-up guy my dad was to keep us, despite his terror and inadequacy. He did not abandon us. It wasn’t until much later that I was able to appreciate this. At the time, being mad at him was easy. He was there every day. Learning to be mad at and fear my mom would take a lot longer."

Whewwww, that resonates with my childhood something fierce. I knew I loved Jewel for a reason.

Super weird after watching six seasons of Alaska the Last Frontier, though.

I saw that no one outran their suffering; they only piled new pain upon their original pain. I saw the pain pile up into insurmountable mountains, and I saw the price people paid who buried all that pain, and along with it their hope, joy, and chance at happiness. All because they were trying to outrun the pain rather than walk through it and heal.

So far, I've only gotten to an enormous info dump. This seems like it will be necessary, but I sort of feel like I'm reading a very bizarre history book.

On the plus side, my internal movie of this book is definitely done in anime format haha.

I've been shuffling this from device to device, because the premise seems really fun. High hopes!

These books are looking to be fantastic. I just wish I knew more about Islam and Judaism because I'm pretty sure I'm mixing up a lot of the references I'm seeing for each culture. I keep trying to find more information about Ras Tiegans, Mhorians, etc, but every gosh darn book in the world has a wikia except this one lmao.

This book is frustrating. I've never read anything from David Mitchell. The shifting perspectives makes me batty, and the language is a bit over the top. But I can't stop reading, and I just wish there was more about Holly. Even though it's all about Holly.

And by gross I mean scary gross, not just yuck gross. Perry's POV makes me itchy.

I feel like maybe I shouldn't be enjoying this book as much as I am. It's trying hard to be ridiculous and witty, but I've just come off an A Song of Ice and Fire binge though, and have been jonesing for a light, silly read.

I enjoyed this book, but it didn't grab me and yank me into the story. Probably because of how clinical the protag is. But, yanno, science and stuff, capable of making even dragons a bit boring.

Oh lord, she just described my formative years.
