Not a bad start. The beginning, Josie’s deceptions, and wondering about the reasons behind them are sufficiently intriguing to keep me reading.

The writing is good, but the story and pacing so far are way too slow. I do like the flashback vignettes that bring past events to life. I’m not abandoning ship just yet though it’s a rocky start for me.

Incidentally, I really think this should have been a romance between Cora and Martha. /That/ I would have eaten up and begged for seconds.

I honestly have no idea what purpose that entire chapter with Luke performing heart surgery served but here we are.

LOL, this book has no discernible plot.

Ok, so I hate first person present narration. But I’m intrigued by the premise enough to keep going. It’s early, but so far the pacing is good, with just enough information dropped to pique my interest and get me to invest in the story.

Angie is such a badass and I love her.

I hate to say this but Julia is truly awful and I’m only reading further hoping she gets some comeuppance for her self-centered ways. I kind of feel like the author could have made her “imperfect” without making her into a total asshole. There are ableist slurs & fat-shaming and I’m not sure how this is a finalist for a National Book Award.
