i’m locked in. but i gotta be honest, i’m kinda freaked out. so fa the scary parts aren’t the scary part, but the way the author depicts the realities of grief during covid-19 has me literally shaking. perhaps too soon. perhaps just a masterful erie set up.

blogs and email chains and 9/11 references abound. i’m locked in, but keep giggling at how much of a period piece feel it has now that both Julie and Julia are set in time’s past.

listening to this in audiobook form has me crying on my commute. all my years using lorde’s work and reading those who came after her, nothing is like reading these essays in context together.

to hear this story in such a concise way when my own life mirrored hers so deeply in my youth and early adulthood is draining. i cannot imagine how long it took to write this and how difficult it was for her. especially in the ways this book differs from jinger’s. the naming of cost when so many of us still hold her public pain so closely to our own grief while we navigate a post iblp cannot have been easy.
