I love how bad of a liar the protagonist is. In many novels of this type, the adults are either spectacularly ignorant or the teenage protagonists are stealthy enough to get away with it anyway. Here, though, Jacob's dad keeps asking, "Where have you been? Who exactly were you with? Why are you suddenly wearing suspenders?" and Jacob has the flimsiest excuses.
