This book doesn't have the problem of having one focal character that's way more interesting than the other (both are vivid and compelling), but I do much prefer the chapters in Painter's world to those in Yumi's world. Yumi's adaptations are more fun than Painter's (understandable) griping.

I've stumbled into a not-unwelcome streak of fantasy books that follow fairly practical heroines. If this is a new trend (Howl's Moving Castle notwithstanding, as an older book), I'm here for it.

I'll be honest, there are things I would do differently with this book if I were revising it now--writing elements I would polish, places I would add chapter breaks, etc.--but I still so love the setting and characters, and remembering how and when different scenes came into existence. It's still an enjoyable read when you're looking for something slow and character-driven, despite its inevitable weaknesses.
