Really frustrated that right now Goodreads is only letting me add one quote before erroring out. I'm trying to add the quotes I saved from The Kobold Guide to Worldbuilding, but refreshing the page or even exiting out altogether and coming back is not fixing the problem and allowing me to add second, third, etc. quotes. -___-

Intending to finish this book this week... but I feel like I read for ages at each sitting and barely make progress, and my patience with the book's ongoing weaknesses is steadily decreasing.

This book feels super long for not a whole lot of depth. It does bring up interesting points, and examples of variation in how people might communicate based on their emotions and relationships (which is especially helpful by way of reminder for writing character interactions), but it feels like it skims over the surface of everything it covers and there are zero citations on anything.

Might come back to this later, but for now I'm clearing it off my plate going into 2026.

*sigh* Not the tight-lacing corset demonization...

So far, this book feels a lot like "Howl's Moving Castle but make it gaslamp and more Grown Up." I don't hate it, but since seeing it I can't unsee it.

This book doesn't have the problem of having one focal character that's way more interesting than the other (both are vivid and compelling), but I do much prefer the chapters in Painter's world to those in Yumi's world. Yumi's adaptations are more fun than Painter's (understandable) griping.
