Mildly amusing but very 'cosy' humour, the sort of thing the People's Friend magazine might once have published. Gives an impression of the Scottish West Coast of a century ago, I suppose.

Mildly amusing and I may go back it it at some point, but I've stopped reading it for now.

James is reading Endymion (Hyperion Cantos, #3)
It was ok as an adventure novel, but I couldn't help but wonder why whoever or whatever was operating the farcasters didn't just send Aenea and her companions to their final destination immediately. In the second Hyperion book we see the Web President use a portable farcaster to visit various destinations, so surely whatever was reactivating the large, fixed farcasters could have done the same thing?

James is reading The Fall of Gondolin (Middle-Earth Universe)
Interesting but not really what I expected. I thought it would be a novel-length work along the lines of 'The Children of Hùrin', not a collection of various versions of the story. Amusing to see the Elves sometimes being called Gnomes, though ..

Ali Smith is clearly a talented writer, but I'm afraid I didn't like this one. For me, it never rose above 'mildly interesting' and the historical section just didn't appeal at all.

So it goes.

James is reading Ma’am Darling: 99 Glimpses of Princess Margaret
Funny stuff, but I don't think Mags really had much of a life. Most of her friends come off as pretty horrible people.

James is reading Places in the Darkness
Ok, nothing stunning. Essentially a crime thriller with some SF chrome, although the central idea is quite clever. A decent beach read.

James is reading The Liberators Inside the Soviet Army
A grimly comical portrait of the ramshackle Red Army of the 1960s.
