I'm trying so hard but I am SO bored

anna and autumn summer book club challenge reaching the end of part one means I give it a goodreads update

I fear I am truly having just an okay time with this... there's hope for redemption but this is definitely not my favorite of hers

very curious about the William Randolph Hearst of it all! loving the whole fact/lie thing! not nearly as hooked as I've been before!

i am deeply unwell good lord

i did start increasing the audiobook speed at work today I cannot keep listening to essentially repetitive versions of the same scene over and over

Thoughts so far:

- Blake is really, REALLY heavy on exposition in earlier chapters

- These audiobook narrators are SO good

- What *is* power? What *is* magic? I feel like we're being told a lot about very abstract concepts and that people want them but not like. Thinking about what those concepts actually mean yk

- Thinking a lot about how this author is the screenwriter for Anyone But You?? Weird

I am very much enjoying the vignette style of it but I think I'm more interested in the writing choices Rooney is making than what the story actually is if that makes sense?

ngl I think the stylistic choice to not use quotation marks for dialogue is SO strong...everything is a part of the narrative in their heads, it's giving it all this suspended feeling

returning to this now that it's no longer Gothic season but I keep thinking about how annoyed I am at Isabella

have now been reading this book in what is essentially three (3!!!) different formats and Rosamund Pike...I love you

gonna be super real I think the impossibly hot woman who you *coincidentally* got to save who keeps encouraging you in whatever way to use the one power might be evil...idk just a hunch....good for her tho

okay prose problem is fixed by this point. i think we are getting to a fairly extreme level of red ajah evil portrayal though like I get it but I would LOVE a bit more nuance. thank goodness there's so much more for robert to give that (please Robert)

the prose is kinda repetitive in this one and less good so far? I am impressed by how stupid Rand continues to be tho!

am fascinated by current events and really hoping I finish this tn

pretty sure that how harrowed I feel at certain repetitive beats is Jordan putting me in the characters' shoes as they grow more anxious and paranoid but it is a bit frustrating to go through

okay maybe this middle bit isn't PERFECTLY paced but I am sure holding my breath during these action scenes

genuinely I think Robert Jordan is so good at pacing out the typical journey story of a fantasy; the sped-up narrative description parts of it and the stops. have never once felt like we've spent too much time on the road or like anything was bogged down, even in this massive (massive) book thank you Robert

I have been irritated about the way women are written in this but I am fascinated by the way Egwene's role in the world is evolving. also I wish Rand would shut up he's so annoying support!! Egwene!!
