I feel like this book abandons half of the stuff the characters learned in the first book. They cut the dino DNA with DNA from other creatures since they couldn’t get a complete strand (thus how they were able to breed, they picked up the ability to swap sexes from frog DNA). But they now think they’re witnessing authentic dino behaviour and don’t consider hybrid influences. If only Grant was here, he’d know.

This is better than Uprooted so far, but if it also throws in a ridiculous ‘romance’ out of nowhere I’m gonna be pissed.

I think Mieville’s writing is generally fantastic, but he has used the word “puissant” three times in the last eight pages and it’s starting to get on my nerves 😂.

Haven’t found much time for reading lately, but this is still super good!

“Tim had never seen [a touchscreen], but he’d read about them in magazines”. Every now and then I’m reminded how old this book actually is.

This is getting tense and I am LOVING IT.

Miéville’s worlds are 100x more imaginative than any other sci fi/fantasy I’ve ever read.

Part of me is loving the slow build up to this; but a bigger part of me is demanding we get some dinosaur action NOW.

I put this aside for weeks but it’s so good I’m determined to finish it soon.

The reader of the audio book has a lovely southern accent which makes this feel very immersive; until she tries to do an English or Irish accent, anyway, that’s a bit painful lol

I feel like the first part of this is already more exciting than the entire last book.

I went into this totally blind, not knowing either the premise or the average Goodreads score (for the first time in years), and I’m really enjoying it so far!

Just bought Red Dead Redemption 2, so I’m now entering my western era. Yeehaw.

Loving every minute of this.

The reading slump continues so I guess I’ll just keep starting new stuff until something sticks!

I’m so intrigued by this! I have no idea where it’s going, but I’m very much enjoying the way it is written and the perspective of our narrator.

In a massive reading slump, so figure I’ll read something I know I adore in an attempt to break out of it.

I think I’m over this book and could DNF right now quite happily. But I’ve put so much time into it I feel obligated to trudge on.

King sure liked his stereotypical gender roles in the early days. The women handle the cooking and the washing and dutifully pair off with whatever man happens to be convenient, despite the fact that the only doctor around happens to be a veterinarian. And of course Fran is voted secretary and gets to keep the meeting minutes 🙄

Almost halfway in and no crime has been committed. Flavia is fawning over a woman who has been explicitly cruel to others directly in front of her. I just don’t understand this series. The only person I care for at all is Dogger:

Flavia’s relationship with her sisters baffles me. I also have two sisters, and cruelty, animosity, pettiness, and pranks were a part of growing up. But they were balanced by periods of cooperation and affection. The De Luce girls appear to genuinely hate each other? And for no apparent reason? All families are different, sure; but it feels very arbitrary.

Flavia is even more of a conceited and self-righteous busybody in this one than the first two; I recognize that this is sort of necessary to make an 11-year-old solving crimes even remotely plausible, but I do rather hope she gets some kind of comeuppance. I like her still, but she is insufferable.
