In one of his earlier works, Vargas Llosa employs experimental narrative techniques that make the story difficult to follow. And with so many characters and nicknames, I think I need a character chart or crib sheet to keep things sorted. I do like the writing, particularly the descriptions, but the translation from Spanish to English seems a little off in spots.
