Bridesmaids need the same kinds of stories soldiers do, stories that justify why they do what they do. Why they are willing to sacrifice who they are and a good night’s sleep for the noble cause of defending democracy and Lila and Gary’s love.

This author MUST have read Annihilation - and must have felt it lodge in her brain like it did for me… because this weird tale is nothing like it and yet everything like it in feel and it all revolves around the lighthouse

re-reading before I dive into Iron Widow #2. it's SO good and I'm catching a lot more of the political commentary this time (class and gender issues subverted by government misdirection)!

Nothing wrong with the book and an interesting part of history that i havent explored much (from a rare female perspective no less) but i am having the hardest time picking the book up whenever i put it down.

Did she seem depressed? she was distant… she was struggling.. All true. But would it have mattered if she’d been someone else? If she’d been a social butterfly, they would have said she liked to drink away her pain. If she’d been a straight-A student, they would have said she’d been eaten alive by her perfectionism. There were always excuses for why girls died.

while I'm enjoying the family saga, the conceit of the Book and the boy talking to each other is annoying and so far not paying off with something like insights into what makes us human or the like (it's early days I'll admit)

Dang this book is a delight so far and a wonder of translation!

Ugh - I might be done with this… it is literally painful and I am not seeing any ‘hilarity.’ I should have known when it was Atwood blurbing about the humor.

Anyone who wants power within a white male power structure has been asked to quell anything that sounds like wrath, to reassure that they come in cooperative peace and are not looking to mete out repercussion against those who have oppressed or subjugated them.

Honestly the best part so far has been the intro - an explanation by the author on how much she adored the imagery of Grendel’s mother and why she chose to update this big-fish tale as told by a bunch of drunk brawlers at the local pub. That + the first line.

I may be a little tipsy/overly sensitive right now or this book may be breaking my heart.
