A sudden storm turns the day to early night, trapping us inside his boat with hot Earl Grey and a generous splash of bourbon. We're supposed to be enemies, but sitting in the dim, quiet cabin, the silence isn’t as awkward as it should be. We've both hit raw nerves today, and neither of us wants to look away.

Only 5 weeks until Forbidden Forward launches! Here's another peek, from Chap 5 "Captain Colby": He's the player my brother warned me to steer clear of, a "sandpaper grunt" with a massive ego. But watching him lift disabled kids onto his boat with such patience, speaking to them as if they have no limits ... Colby Chase is completely unraveling my preconceived notions. He’s masterful.

Forbidden Forward goes to Beta readers this week (releases 10/22)! A snippet from Chap 4: I didn’t have a plan. I just knew I was headed for the coast. Sailboats hearken back to a time when sailors had only the wind and their wits. Something about the water anchors me. I came to clear my head, never expecting what—or who—was waiting for me at the end of the pier.

Another Forbidden Forward snippet, from Chap 6. Colby's realization: I thought she was hands-off the moment she smiled at another guy. Now that I know she’s Harper’s sister, she is so far off-limits she may as well be circling the solar system in a spaceship. It’s all the excuse I need to flee, and I don’t hesitate. If he knew I touched her, he wouldn’t hesitate to take a swing with his stick and crack my head open.

Almost done writing Forbidden Forward! Here's a peek from Chap 2, First Impressions: I hyperfocus on what’s taboo. I covertly observe his carelessly styled brown hair and clipped beard, his six-foot-something frame, and his I-don’t-give-a-crap stance. The dude wears his arrogance like a badge of honor. There was no missing the attitude my brother despises. Colby Chase radiates prick vibes.

Having so much fun writing Forbidden Forward. Another snippet:

Donny’s eyebrows hit his hairline. “No rideshares. And I don’t want you accepting rides from any of my teammates.”

“Protective much?” I snort. “Seriously, Donny. These guys are your brothers. You can’t trust them to deliver me home unmolested?”

He doesn't budge. “A few. Maybe. But Chase? No way would I leave you alone with him. Ever.”

I sit quietly while my brother drones on about the win. Normally, I’d be cheering—I am prouder of my little bro than he’ll ever know—but then, I’m not even supposed to be here. The fact that I am is another layer of humiliation heaped on a pile so high it obliterates the sky. I’m a walking bomb dying to be detonated.

My superpower is my ability to agitate, to stir the pot, to get under the other players’ skin like a burrowing tick—and I’m damn successful at it. Which is a good thing because that’s the only reason I’m here. I’ve got that reason locked in a death grip so I can keep playing the game I love. It’s all I’ve ever wanted. It’s all I know.
