I'm really struggling to get into this one. I wanted to love it but it's a rough start

I feel like in theory I should love this book but in practice...I just can't seem to sympathise with either of the characters.

this book is really melancholic. Mary HK Choi's writing is as beautifully descriptive as ever. it's the inverse of those books where a teen suffers through suburbia for their life to start when they graduate and move to New York.

I didn't realise how much of other paranormal romance/fantasy novels were directly influenced by this and how this was so directly influenced by Harry Potter. Reading this for the first time in 2021 is like a case study in YA fiction and trends.
