She was really just taking it one day at a time. But a lifetime is made of individual days. If she didn’t figure something out, she was going to reach her deathbed and still be wondering where she belonged.

Perhaps that’s why I choose to disappear into books. It’s a place where I can feel seen for who I am and everything I’ve been through. Where I’m not judged for the things I’ve done or the messes I’ve made. And in these books, I can give myself the ending that was stolen from me. The ending I no longer believe exists in real life.

If you can’t laugh at yourself from time to time then you’re going to end up spending a lot of your life taking offence over things that really don’t matter.

To borrow Granny's description, a bookstore is a place densely populated with tens of thousands of authors, dead or living, residing side-by-side. But books are quiet. They remain dead silent until somebody flips open a page. Only then do they spill out their stories, calmly and thoroughly, just enough at the time for me to handle.
