OMG an amazingly sick classic. This is not science fiction. This time travel is PTSD. Published in 1969, I guess they hadn't named it yet.

I have to ditch the audible version. Is Sybil a smug, lock jawed, self-impressed moneyed old lady? I'm not getting this actors interpretation and want my own. Back to the text.

Kolbert is a great writer on environmental issues. Her prose is crystal clear and compelling. Like all good journalists, she has her eyewitness boots on the ground.

In 2010 Bejing, demand for the iPhone 4 became riotous. Yellow cows (gray market resellers) hired surrogate purchasers to queue up. The phones were distributed outside urban centers at huge profit. This is a fascinating business story that has set the geopolitical table.

This reads like an exciting novel about Nobel prize winning scientists, titans of industry and engineering, and ruthless economic competition. Great geopolitical foundation for understanding our (U.S.) current Asian partners and rivals. It won the FT best biz book in 2022.
Highly recommend.

Adichie blames men for pretty much every evil that has befallen her woman friends. She makes a compelling case for her harsh judgement.
Her description of NIgerian banking corruption:
" Foreigners go on and on about the challenges of emerging markets, not knowing that the biggest is the hubris of irresponsible men"

I didn't read about the controversy surrounding this whistle-blowing book in advance. So I was surprised to find the first few chapters are wildly self absorbed. Alert! There is fine print on the front cover that warns "a memoir".

Khaled was displaced by tyranny and never recovered from the loss of his country. He forged lifelong bonds with fellow exiled countrymen and these nearly blood relationship sustained him. London was good to him but it's not the same. Nothing can ever replace home and family.
