This book is slow going, though good - feels like a lot of books I've read from that era - like Ray Bradbury/Tom Robbins-esque (Fahrenheit 451 and Still Life with Woodpecker, respectively, come to mind) where not everything is explained to the reader - and a lot of it seems like stream of consciousness, either from the first person narrative of the character or the author...
