It reads like poetry and Joe Morton’s narration is stunning!

So far so good. John Morton is a wonderful
narrator!

After reading Gods of Jade and Shadows, by Silvia Moreno Garcia, I have a revived thirst for a female protagonist who is motivated by things other than the approval of boys and men. Let’s see how this adds up...

Casiopea is learning so much, so fast. But, she’s taking it in stride.

There’s something so invigorating about a young Latinx woman of colour exercising authority over her own experience. This story needs to be told and I’m loving it. Moreno-Garcia’s writing, the satisfying chapters (ugh, they are so complete), the humour and sarcasm, the atmospheric descriptions of the protagonist’s journey. I’m so here for this. ❤️

Immediately, I love the lush dialects and the way Petrus describes the Caribbean landscape (“the bush”) and cultural markers (“silver bangles”) that I know so well. But she’s added elements that I never experienced as being connected to my experience of Trinidad - magick. I’m excited to get into this read.

I love the thrilling pace of the book so far. The ending in Part 1 was a bit flat, but that did not take away from the excitement of it all.

“We come in peace.” Has taken on a whole new meaning.

I’m also reflecting on what it means for aliens to invade a once colonized place.

What does this change?
