I’m at the halfway point and I have to say I’m enjoying this. The premise is totally bonkers and not the sort of thing I’d normally go for, but the story is endlessly inventive and the audiobook narrator really brings out the humour in the writing.

So yesterday I learned that Russian has two different words for cannibalism, depending on whether you eat a corpse you just find or you, um, take more extreme steps to procure a fresh corpse.
This information is going to live in my brain rent-free.

Ngl I was expecting this to be a bit of a dry history book, but it’s actually really so well-written (and so well-read by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith) that it’s really exciting. Brings history to life.
