Anthony Mowers is 80% done with Programming in Scala: Updated for Scala 2.12
This is turning out to be a good read, however not a quick read. In addition to being an in depth introduction to the Scala programming language it also a nice introduction to functional programming.

The language lessons are used as a vehicle to illustrate general purpose programming concepts and programming language features. For example, object mutability, DSL (domain specific languages) and algorithms.

Anthony Mowers is 30% done with All of Statistics: A Concise Course in Statistical Inference (Springer Texts in Statistics)
This book attempts to give an overview of statistical inference without following the usual path of first doing a lengthy introduction to probability theory.

It's an interesting and appreciated approach because it does indeed seem like the typical approach takes a long time before getting to inference concepts. However the content does require some amount of mathematical maturity to follow.
