I know next to nothing about Chinese culture and history though it has always intrigued me, and this is a very very interesting insight to what life was like in 1948 for Chinese women specifically. Their lives worth nothing without giving or being male heir. To think that wasn’t even 100 years ago…(the book is based on a true story.)

Things are FINALLY starting to pick up. But not by much.

ZzzzzzzzZzzzzzzZzzz…. 😴 too many unimportant details makes It an annoyingly boring read and disappointment.

Bev’s husband screams the good ol’ “my parents beat me and I turned out just fine! Kids these days are pansies….”
But are you fine though? 😬 seems like you’re a bit unstable due to the beatings, my dude. God forbid kids grow up in new generations with less familial trauma to deal with and not keep cycling abuse. 😑

This will be the largest amount of pages I’ve read in a book by the time I finish this…in like a month. 😂 I appreciate how detailed Stephen King can be, but he kinda rambles like ADHD brain. 😅

Just read the forward and of all the North Korean defector accounts I’ve read, this one has me…on edge? A good amount of what he says is confirmed truth, but he’s changed his story majorly once, and some camp 14/18 survivors even question his truthfulness about different things. Not to mention the 2014 propaganda video involving his father against him…trauma makes things foggy, true. But why lie? 🤔

Though the book is fiction, it still depicts real events of World War 2. Of all the years I’ve studied the war, back to when I was a child even, I had never knew about the ship full of refugee children that was torpedoed on its way to Canada in 1940 because Britain refused to take them in. “The City of Benares.” Huge tragedy to have never been heard of in mainstream history…wow.

This was a book given to me last fall along with about four others from my neighbor, I have had my doubts about it as it doesn’t seem like my typical read but it’s actually quite hilarious and one hundred pages in, I’m enjoying it a lot more than I thought I would. Very rom com like with a hint of the supernatural.
