"The reactionary view us that it's all gone so ridiculously far - political correctness has gone so distressingly, dangerously and self-harmingly insane - that occasionally, would you believe it, things are now unfair on men! This doesn't seem to take into account that if situations weren't sometimes unfair on men too, it wouldn't be fair."

David Mitchell is a wise man. Funny and wise.

"The world is not safe and we don't make it safer by pretending it is."

Of all the things in this particular chapter, this is the one that I think really tells it like it is, and tells it well. I know I haven't given many updates, but I am enjoying this book.

"It's already obvious to me that Mum's death is not going to Sink In and neither will I ever be Over It. The best I can do is coexist with it. Grief has to talk to normality, normality has to talk to grief, and they both have to listen. It's an ongoing peace deal, a two-state solution."

This is one of the best things I've read. After my dad's death, Rob, this hits. And it fucking sucks.

"I have to go with the flow and the flow is: stop doing stuff you like when it becomes somehow inappropriate. It's not so much Act Your Age as Act Your Gender."

Pretty damn relatable.

"...boys should not disrespect girls because people should not disrespect people. They should aspire not to mere gentility, but to the greater prize: gentleness. In their manners, and in their actions. And anyone willing to do this - especially at risk of a smack in the face - is worthy of praise."

"One way of imagining life is that it's a competition between love and death. Death always wins, of course, but love is there to make its victory a hollow one. That's what love is for."

That's beautiful.

Taking my time with this one because I'm trying to absorb the lessons. Lindsay Adler is one of my favorite photographers and I'm so glad she wrote this book. There's so much to learn, especially when it comes to photographing people, and having someone with her experience as a guide is just friggin' awesome.

"To a parent, your child wasn't just a person: your child was a place, a kind of Narnia, a vast eternal place where the present you were living and the past you remembered and the future you longed for all existed at once."

She got the nail on the head.

So far this book is incredible. I haven't been glued to a story like this in a long time. I haven't even finished yet and I already recommend it. Just brilliant.
