Karen is reading This Is Happiness
I’m going to stop trying to finish this one. It’s interesting but the style of writing is just too wordy and detailed for me at this time.

Karen is reading The Hidden Life of Trees: What They Feel, How They Communicate: Discoveries from a Secret World
I couldn’t get into this. As a forester and person working the woods with trees, to refer to them in a very human way just fell short. I believe some if the observations were interesting and some of the descriptions of tree physiology was spot on, but some of the authors assertions were undocumented.

Links to references were broken or left blank. If rewritten to the facts then I think it could be a good book.

Karen is reading Raven Girl
It was a nice little fantasy read about a lonely man who saves a baby raven and falls in love. Through them a baby is born who is neither raven nor human. Without diving too deeply into it, there is a bit of psychological issues but I enjoyed the artwork. It’s an adult version of a fairy tale.

Karen is reading The Cambridge Theorem
Interesting spy novel, ended a bit too neat for my taste and rambled off in places but good.

Karen is finished with The Piano Tuner
Intriguing story of a piano tuner called into service by a British officer in Burma during the 1880s to tune a piano on the jungle. He’s a simple man living a simple life before leaving on this odd journey.

I loved the writing and vivid descriptions of the journey, culture and environment. Beautifully written with just enough intrigue to keep you engaged.

Karen is reading Whistling Past the Graveyard
Its a story of a young white girl growing up in 1963 Mississippi who runs away from her grandmother and looks for her mothers in Nashville. Along the way she’s found by a kind black woman with a secret and is held captive by the woman’s abusive husband. Written from the young girls perspective it’s raw and sweet and can teach us about learning and love.

Karen is reading If Beale Street Could Talk (Vintage International)
Finished after my book club discussed and I haven’t seen the movie but I liked it. Based in New York it’s a story of a young couple in love and what happens after the boy is falsely charged with a crime. The style of writing is a bit poetic and reads more like a section rather than complete story.

Karen is reading H is for Hawk
Well written but I had a bit of trouble with the about of time spent on the training of the hawk vs the time spent on the Gos’ story. Overall it was ok.

Karen is reading No Baggage: A Minimalist Tale of Love and Wandering
Travel log from Turkey, to Greece, to Serbia, Scotland and England with no luggage and the most minimum of plans with a girl/boy you just met a few weeks earlier through a dating site. It was ok. The lead characters seemed like they tried a bit hard to sound detached but I love to travel and could relate to some of the things they went through.

Karen is reading The Dogs
Youth novel about a boy, ghost and running from an abusive father. It had me a bit on edge and most of it was really written well. Ending was a little weak but overall it was entertaining.

The writing is still nice and the characters wonderful but this book ended a bit too abruptly.
