# Symptoms of Complexity
- Change amplification: seemingly simple changes requiring code modifications in many different places.
- Cognitive load: how much a developer needs to know in order to complete a task.

Cognitive load arises in many ways, such as APIs with many methods, global variables, inconsistencies, and dependencies between modules.

At an interesting part of the book talking about early birds and night owls. Tends to coincide with whether you were born in the spring (early bird) or winter (night owl).

Ed Lee is on page 34 of 219 of The Passionate Programmer: Creating a Remarkable Career in Software Development (Pragmatic Life)
Deceptively intuitive so if you're not careful you'll undervalue the gems of advice in this book. There are passages in here I want to extract to be able to use to reorient myself. Ex: When I worry about being a generalist, there's this great passage about the values of being a generalist in Tip 7's Be a Generalist.
