In the midst of reading it and honestly I began prepared to be disappointed, but this is actually a good read. The author starts off in a more cutesy, teenagey vibe but also subtly manages to inject organising and how difficult it is throughout the narrative. This feels like what Celeste Ng’s Little Fires everywhere could have been. The interpretations of oppression are kept basic but not naive.

Fifteen poems in and she has become my favourite poet of all time.

Thank God this book exists. A fine and subtle commentary on race, religion, religious trauma with a heavy dose of comedy. This is the writing of someone who understands society, understands the intersection of societal problems troubling coloured society. This book offers everything that Celeste Ng promised but didn't deliver in her book Little Fires Everywhere.

Bought this book for the Mahmoud Darwish poems

And lovers also gather your inheritance.
They are poets of one brief hour.
They kiss an expressionless mouth into a smile
as if creating it anew, more beautiful.
Awakening desire, they make a place
where pain can enter;
that's how growing happens.
They bring suffering along with their laughter,
and longings that had slept and now awaken
to weep in a stranger's arms.

To read his poems is truly a meditative experience.
