It's weird today reading about a boy experiencing the Shakespearean era stage practice of young men in all-male actor crews having to dress for women's roles. Thankfully the portrayal is wholesomely funny and focuses on effort and humility in doing what must be done.

Buchan fishing in Scotland with Andrew Lang and being teased about losing his Scottishness - I love mentally seeing two names on my bookshelf alive having fun together

"Let us all settle it firmly in our minds that the only way to pass through "what is seen" with comfort, and look forward to "what is unseen" without fear, is to have Christ for our Savior and Friend, to lay hold of Christ by faith, to become one with Christ and Christ in us, and while we live in the flesh to live the life of faith in the Son of God."

"Before considering the character of Milton's Satan it may be desirable to remove an ambiguity by noticing that Jane Austen's Miss Bates could be described either as a verv entertaining or a very tedious person..."

And thus you know the chapter on Satan is going to be pretty good...

"The love of Jesus is not shallow water: no man has ever yet seen its bottom. The compassion of Jesus is a fire that never yet burned low: the cold, grey ashes of that fire have never yet been seen. Take comfort. In your own heart you may find little cause for rejoicing, but you may always rejoice in the Lord."

"The gift of the Spirit to those who are justified by faith in Christ brings about the obedience from the heart which the law demanded... fulfilling the promise of the New Covenant (cf Je. 31:31-34; Ezk. 36:25-27). It is the obedience which proceeds from faith."

The family gathering of all God's people will make up for all that their religion now costs them. A meeting where none are missing--a meeting where there are no gaps and empty places--a meeting where there are no tears--a meeting where there is no parting--such a meeting as this is worth a fight and a struggle. And such a meeting is yet to come to "the whole family in heaven and earth."

If Tolkien read War and Peace, Platon Karataev had to have been a seed for Tom Bombadil.
The way Karataev pulls Pierre from his mental grave of horror after witnessing the shootings, simply by being his inexplicable, jolly self, singing and loving all the world - there's so much similarity to the barrows and Tom Bombadil, but also so much difference as to be no copying, but simply genius lighting genius
