Enthralling! Salacious!!

Anastasi excellently carries out her stated aim, to be “a guide who takes the reader on a personally conducted tour of the literature”. Her selection of excerpts and annotations are both compelling. It is special to be able to read about the academy’s budding understanding of race as a social construct at the time of the book’s writing.

My first Rooney, reading pace was slower at first getting used to her cadence. Ivan seems to struggle with nuance (can relate), while Peter’s actions seem driven by a belief he is beyond redemption (can also relate?). I wonder whether the details of Sylvia’s accident will become important or if the vagueness is meant to increase relatability to readers.
