this is an interesting read at a time when state violence is at the forefront of our attention.

closer to dnf-ing
i’ve become a bit disillusioned with Gays writing style.
and after re-reading a favourite short story of Carmen Maria Machedo - who also deals with the dark crevices of the human soul, our messed up desires and the messiness of human relationships - i have realised what i feel is missing - intimacy.
the lack of it makes everything feel misanthropic

This book is a lot. I might just not be in the right space for it, but I feel I am just reading trauma and pain for the sake of telling a story with trauma and pain.
Gay is an incredible writer, extraordinarily evocative and she has a very distinctive voice.
I think for right now I want escapism and fun, not graphic realistic emotional and physical violence.
Anyway not going to dnf just yet..
