This moment with Mami's son feels like foreshadowing... a potential message from this story: let people be themselves so that everyone learns something. There are some social taboos (like murder) that if someone doesn't understand it then it needs to be explained why it is unacceptable... so repressing the true self seems to be the problem.

A message of this book must be that machines should not replace human work, but the author lays it out in a weird way. It's basically the Pole's family-less/powerless servants who are suffering in poverty versus Babel's powerless living in poverty because they aren't allowed to work and contribute to society. Need to think about this more...
