We turn a blind eye to being wronged by acts of misfortune, but not to being wronged by others. We are quick to let anger consume us, instead of being thankful for avoiding misfortune that could’ve been worse than the outcome we encountered.

Can you accept the truth of criticism for what it is without getting angry? If others actions or words disappoint or anger you, why do you continue to be around them?

i find it interesting how Seneca urges to support your neighbors wellbeing as much as your own, because i feel as though humans have an innate tendency to “be the best” per say. Overcoming it is not something everyone can just simply do, because if we could our society would not be nearly as run down as it is.

Being mindful of what is out of your control is essential. Doing what is within your power is all you can do. If someone else takes on your burdens they are just as likely to suffer the results of failure, just as you are. Be aware of who you get close to when suffering is raging about. If they lose everything, you are at risk to lose just as much.

Seneca does not expect us to manage magnanimity and the ability to be unmoved by obstacles instantly. Instead he expects us to build this ability—gradually. Those who are wise accept things as they come, and do not see experiences as good nor bad. It’s good to have goals, but set goals with limits. Do not fire away with the expectation that it will all work out. Have something to show for it.

Right now, I believe a big theme is teaching one how to take things as they come.
