I can't say I'm particularly impressed by either the writing or the audiobook narrator. I'm not quite ready to drop this yet, but won't be surprised if I do.

God help me but it’s finally growing on me. Very glad that the characters are at least starting to ask the right questions.

The book is narrated by the town’s ghosts (who are stuck in the cemetery gossiping) and I love them

Tbh I’m having a little trouble getting into this, though I also think there’s some formatting issues with the ebook that aren’t helping - I put a hold at the library for a print copy, so I’m going to pause this for a bit and start my book for book club.

Yes, yes, I have been peer pressured into giving this another go via Daily Dracula. As if having to read it twice for school wasn’t enough - at least this time I’ll have the memes and clowning for entertainment. If I have to put in the time to read it you can bet Im marking it on goodreads, even if it’s going to take me half a year.

Evike is genuinely the worst at arguments/insults/comebacks, she just spits out the same lines again and again with zero finesse like they’re supposed to mean something. And the rest of the book fails to acknowledge this in a way that I can’t even call it a character flaw, it’s just bad writing.

Hmmm, I feel like we’ve gotten off track of the actual story in favor of ‘finding reasons to not feel guilty about lusting after my enemy’

If this were dual POV it might feel less yucky? I would rather have emotions vs sexual attraction regardless, especially this early in the book.

Oof, one of the kids is doing blackface and pretending to be a “conjurer from India.” I suppose it’s not too surprising given the age of the book, but it’s been so long that I completely forgot about it 😬

I’m not sure I’m going to be able to make myself get far enough into this to even meet Jonathan Strange. Ugh

Recording this thought so I don’t forget - I wonder if part of the reason this feels so boring is because almost all of the main characters don’t DO anything - they’re all talk, no real action anywhere on the page (are they doing things? Yes, but it’s all boring government stuff)

Me: all the Spindles are destroyed? But how will they spin thread to weave fabric?! *30 seconds later* OH, never mind :/

So far my only other impressions are “too many names” and “bland”

Rereading for a 3rd(!) time because a neighboring county’s library system is starting a LGBTQ book club! This is my first time reading it in a non-audio format and it’s weird, I really miss the narrator. But I wanted to do it In print, so here we go!

I’m sure making the only black character a pickpocket, thief, and petty criminal so he’s “quirky” was an incredibly well-thought out decision.

Dear god, that line about werewolves and eyebrows REALLY has me questioning if the author (also) reads Teen Wolf fanfic lol 😆

As much as I love imagining Laurence’s surprised pikachu face every time someone accidentally drops some “new” info on him, dear god, if he doesn’t get whacked on the head and get his memories back by the end of the book I’m going to be even more irritated than usual

Alessandra is nowhere near as suave and clever as she thinks she is and it’s kind of disappointing.
