Basically a tour-de-force of fiction. Doerr is incredibly deft at creating characters and placing them in grave circumstances beyond their control. I liked the fresh view beyond much of the past fiction around WWII. His story craftmanship is impeccable.

Not as enchanting as Cold Mountain, but a great story told by an awesome prosewriter.
