Toby Muse is starting Nightfall
Not top notch Goodis. It feels like an early entry, a regular crime pulp, there is a sense of doom, but it’s forced rather than lived in like the later novels. He escapes and gets the girl!
That is not a Goodis book.
His best work is with the born losers, the bums, the drunks who for a moment forget they’re damned before the world reminds them. Goodis doesn’t write novels, he writes long suicide notes.

Excellent. But dark. His books and films always start normal and end in horrific violence.

Some good ones - the surgeon committed to living at any cost, The Mist and the mad authour are the stand outs. Cool motif - Do you love?

Toby Muse is starting The Bonfire of the Vanities
Fantastic - one of the best journalists of all time writes a novel, reporting out each scene. It’s dated now, a historical document of the neuroses of New Yorkers of the 1980s. But there’s a breadth to his sweeping vision, a desire to put a whole, unique city in 600 pages or so. Every scene is filled with Wolfe’s insights and observations of the city and its people. Few novels now feel this big.

Men story always funny

But women would repeat stories about folks they did not
know and had never seen, and consequently, without character counting
for anything, the stories were as stark and cold as legend or myth.
