I am having trouble getting into Newbery Medal and Purs Belpré Award winning Donna Barba Higuera’s lastest book.
In a future world, 13 year old Leandro and his little sister Gabi, descendants of the proud Cascabeles who once worked the San Joequin Valley, try to survive working long hours in the fields around the city Pocatel. The odds are against them in a wasteland of monsters, pirates and cruel overlords.

I don’t have time at the present to give this book the attention it deserves. Perhaps I will get back to it later this year.
It’s an unusual historical fiction book in that ignores major characters or events, and focuses, on ordinary people and a lowly priory church, in a desolate area of the fens of England. The details are fascinating, and deserve more attention than I have at present to give it.

It’s the 2nd time I e checked it out, the second time I’ve tried to read it. I’m up to page 85, and I just don’t care! I don’t care about Addie, or Henry or Luc. I do T care about the bargain and the subversive way it brings out evil. I don’t care. I’m abandoning it as one of my very, very few, DNFS

Loving it. Hadn't realized it was finale of Kingdom quarter begun in Jackaroo and continues in The Wings of a Falcon and Fortunes Wheel. Else is such a strong figure, calm and accepting, but always thinking, analyzing and searching/doing what is right.

Loving it. Like it much better than Major Pettigrew's Last Stand, which was good. Like these characters better.

Sherry is on page 151 of 284 of SECRET LANGUAGE (Ballantine Reader's Circle)
Poor sisters dragged around by actor parents, who grow apart as they get older though they still protect one another. When their father's illegitimate daughter comes forth, a further divide separates them. If there is only a limited amount of love to share, dividing by one more makes it less.
