"All of America lies at the end of the wilderness road, and our past is not a dead past, but still lives on in us. Our forefathers had civilization inside themselves, the wild outside. We live in the civilization they created, but within us the wilderness still lingers. What they dreamed, we live, and what they lived, we dream" - TK Whipple

Crass, immature, elementary writing, but so so fun. Reminds me of Monster Hunter International by Larry Correia.

I'm a die-hard "cats rule, dogs drool" person. Princess Donut running into the dingo dog monsters was brilliant. I can't get enough of her and Carl. I can't wait for them to encounter the kick-ass girl with the 2 dogs, likely in a later book?

Happy I started this after it sat wasting away on my "to-read" shelf, like most books do. It is beautifully written. So beautifully written that it is a calming book despite being dystopian. I am listening to it as an audiobook. The narrator is great. Excited to watch the AppleTV series after Im done. If they do it justice like they did Murderbot, I'll be one happy cat.

I read the first chapter, promptly switched to audiobook and re-started it with my husband to enjoy it together before bed. It is driving me nuts when he falls asleep. I find myself ridden with guilt frompick up my kobo and reading an extra chapter after he sleeps. I can't help it! Then I listen to the same chapter with him the next night. Basically, this book is so fun I'm experiencing it twice simultaneously.

I have one square left on my "Ka'u Libraries Summer Reading Challenge Bingo" card. I need to "Read a book on display at the library."

Hawai'i murder mystery it is! Excited to tap into this genre.

Good old-fashioned storytelling with 1-dimensional characters. Think of an adventurous bedtime story you'd formulate for a child but instead for adults. . . with mild Conan the Barbarian vibes. It's entertaining.

Prime mind-expanding fantasy. Challenges the boundaries of imagination. The world-building reminds me of Piers Anthony, but mature and polished. I hope the storytelling keeps up with the writing.

What a fun book! A reclusive yet relatable "murderbot" (part human, part killing machine) is hired as security to protect humans while they go about their corporate projects on dangerous unknown planets. Murderbot is so darn lovable!

Short book with lots more to come. Could this become a new favorite series??? Promising start at least!

Erin is starting The Help
My local library has a summer reading competition in the playful form of Bingo. My card has a square that says to "Read a book made into a movie". I almost chose Fellowship of the Ring but I thought I'd branch out from my norm. My sister recently read this and loved it, so I'm giving it a go!

I've never seen the movie.

I finished Born with the Dead. 2 stars. I could summarize the book in a single boring sentence. Worried bc reviews tend to say this was the better of the two stories in this book. Having said that, Saliva Tree made me buy the Goodwill book. I hope it's at least worth the time.

What's better than a novella with a kick-ass cover? TWO novellas sandwiched between TWO kick-ass covers. Who needs a back cover anyway?

"He" is excellent. A Pacific Islander Jaws.

"They'd encountered a terror whose physiological effect was even more overwhelming than its reality. It did not belong to the world of men, this perfect unmatched killing machine. How puny man seemed, how feeble his invented efforts at destruction."

Living in Hawaii, I've felt this over gentle giant honu, lol. The open ocean is their home, not ours.

These short stories are my bread and butter of reading. Each story 10ish pages packed with the fine details of a truly bizarre premise.

Think Twilight Zone, or Black Mirror. . . the episodes that make you a little uneasy due to it hitting hard on the truths of human nature. I love it, slowly savoring each page.

Highlight: "Why Johnny Can't Speed" could easily be read as a prequel to Mad Max. 10 stars.
