DNF 53% zero stars because not only is this book not for me I actually dislike it passionately.

DNF about 50%. Lost interest. The writing is not interesting enough. The characters should be but somehow aren’t - none of them seem real - they are outlines on a page.

The Sudeten refugees did not speak of Palestine. The very concept of home had lost its meaning; they had sen how one day their state could exist and the next it could disappear. Most looked within themselves for a sense of belonging.

Chapter 4 - to continue or not. I don’t care for the writing and dialogue feels fake and try hard. I don’t care for the characters or should i say caricatures.

Knew I’d love it within minutes

Why does she love him?

Sad - how much women give up for men who betray and let them down.

Oh dear - this is not looking hopeful - the men are sexist knobs.

So far it is about Cumberbatch & I’m bored.

I’m done - too much melodramatic, unrealistic dialogue, caricarure; too many cringy moments.

I think I’m going to bail.

I’m bored.

So far there is ableism, racism and sexism.
The writing is spare which is fine.
Best part is the dialogue - I’m thinking it reflects the language of the ppl of the time - has feeling of authenticity.
But why is this a classic worth reading in Australia in 2022? No idea. But I’ll persist cos I want to try to understand why it is being taught to year 10 students in my local public high school today!

Is this a joke. I can’t see how this has the makings of a classic that deserves to be read in 2022.

Paused - this is not persuasive - no consideration of culture wrt Tongan boys rescued or conduct of Australian sailor after he rescued them, and equality between sexes in hunter-gathered societies?
