“I can’t say what I really remember and what I only remember because Aunt Quinlan told me the story. But I remember how I felt. And that’s the important part.”

“… she trusts me not to reject her for being angry… I might say she is thinking of me like a mother. Someone who will take the worst she has to offer, and never turn away”.
This made me reflect on how often we take out our worst behaviours with those we love the most. I’d never connected it to trust before but it makes sense.

Isn’t it a shame that when things are going so well, our minds by default go to the negative and the inevitable “when will the other shoe drop?” mindset …

It was done then. Cap was gone, and she would never see him again. What an odd idea really, to know that someone so very necessary in your life was lost to you and couldn’t be called back.

She reminded herself that people who shied away from her because she had a brain and a profession weren’t worth her time. A friend was someone you didn’t have to make excuses to. Someone who took you as you were.

There was nothing predictable in this life, and very little that was fair.

How reassuring it must be to know how you should act: like having a definition of yourself written clearly in black type.

…. Sheldon presses his nose into the thick wool and takes in as much of the past as he can handle. Then his eyes begin to tear up and he stops. He composes himself and goes to the bathroom to wash his face. In the mirror he sees a man he does not entirely recognize. And for this he is grateful.
