Literally the only good thing about Wanahomen so far is that he’s nice to his camel.

I went back and checked that this book hadn’t been translated from another language. For some reason it reads as though it has been. I don’t know if that’s deliberate.

“What was unique about this crime, was that the perpetrator could suggest the victim experienced pleasure and people wouldn't bat an eye. There's no such thing as a good stabbing or bad stabbing, consensual murder or nonconsensual murder. In this crime, pain could be disguised and confused as pleasure.”

I like the meta aspect of the fictional author having written a book about a middle-aged white man. Clever.

Just once it would be nice to see an account of people coming to a country and meeting the indigenous peoples where the account didn’t end with “and then they butchered most of the indigenous people and erased their culture.” Has anyone seen any historical examples of positive cultural interactions between native people and settlers in any country? Genuinely interested.
